The block contains seven genuine specimens: amethyst, citrine, agate, lapis lazuli, white quartz, obsidian, and turquoise. Each stone is identified on the full-colour instruction sheet included in the kit, with facts about its mineral type, colour, and geological origin.
The kit contains a wooden mallet, a chisel, a brush, a sponge, and a magnifying glass, along with the plaster block and a cardboard digging tray. The tray keeps debris contained during excavation, making clean-up considerably easier.
Excavation time varies by approach and enthusiasm, but most children aged 8 and over complete the full block in one to two sittings of around 30-45 minutes each. Dampening the plaster block slightly with water, as shown in the instructions, softens the material and speeds up digging.
